Yogi Adityanath is well known for making provocative speeches that hinge on divisive lines. From comparing Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan to Pakistani terrorist Hafeez Saeed, to asking people to leave India if they don’t practise Surya Namaskar, he has been at the centre of several controversies.
A strong votary of construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, he successfully drove the BJP’s Hindutva campaign in eastern UP in the just concluded Assembly polls. In fact, the priest turned politician played the religious card actively during his pre-poll campaign, talking about how ‘love Jihad’ and ‘Kairana Hindu’ exodus were important agendas for his party.

#1. Yogi Adityanath was the youngest member of the 12th Lok Sabha legislature; since 1998, he has been winning from the Gorakhpur constituency consistently.
#2. Adityanath was born in a village in present-day Uttarakhand in 1972 as Ajay Singh to a Rajput family. He later took the name ‘Adityanath’.
#3. Yogi Adityanath completed his B.Sc. from Srinagar’s HNB Garhwal University. His oratory skills are too good. Apart from Hindutva, he speaks about many issues in the Parliament.
#4. He is an MP from Lok Sabha, and has been winning consistently from his constituency since 1998.
#5. He runs his own “youth wing” called the Hindu Yuva Vahini, which has been accused of inflaming communal passions. They were accused in the 2005 Mau riots.
#6.Adityanath is a five-time MP from the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency.
